How the Drinking Habits of Fathers May Contribute to Birth Defects in Newborns

 

“New evidence suggests a link between paternal alcohol consumption before conception and the chances of fetal birth defects.  The study, published in JAMA Pediatrics, found that paternal drinking is associated with an increased risk of sperm abnormalities, which could lead to birth defects."

FASD in a Midwestern City: Child Characteristics, Maternal Risk Traits, and Prevalence

 

 “This city displayed the lowest prevalence of FASD of the four sites. Nevertheless, FASD were common, and affected children demonstrated a common, recognizable and measurable array of traits… Neurobehavioral tests distinguished children with FASD from controls, more for behavioral problems than cognitive delay. Children with ARND demonstrated the poorest neurobehavioral indicators.”

 As Thanksgiving nears and the excitement of finally celebrating with family and friends is upon us.  Many people are including adult beverages as part of their gatherings and the temptation for over indulging will be present.  This year, why not include non-alcoholic beverages that can be festive and tasty, perfect for that holiday toast and celebrating those you love.  Especially if you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant, as an alcohol-free pregnancy is the healthiest option.
